21st Century Classroom Initiative
The 21st Century Classroom is designed to demonstrate how technology enhances and deepens student understanding. The design of the digital classroom evolved from our experience with two other pilots conducted at Brown Middle School in 8th grade science classes. One pilot implemented 1:1 computing with laptops (spring 2008) and the other implemented 1:1 computing with netbooks along with a suite of interactive tools (spring 2009).
In June 2009, the Department of Information Technology sent out a request for proposal for one team to pilot the teaching of 21st century skills using innovative technology. Bigelow Middle School Cluster 6B teachers Megan Flaherty and Ken Waldman were awarded this grant. Tools include an interactive white board in the classroom, and Dell netbooks for each student. Explore this website to see examples of projects and work samples that demonstrate how students incorporate the 4 C’s of 21st century skills: critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration.
