Welcome to the Office of Teaching & Learning. The mission of the Newton Public Schools is to educate, prepare, and inspire all students to achieve their full potential as life-long learners, thinkers, and productive contributors to our global society. The role of Teaching & Learning is to provide leadership and expertise in each discipline while working collaboratively with all Newton educators to ensure learning for all students.
The responsibilities of curriculum coordinators (K-8, 6-8, K-12) and high school department chairs (9-12) include:
- Leading the development and implementation of standards-based curriculum, instruction, and assessment to ensure that students meet the district goals
- Assuring alignment and consistency of the curriculum within and across grade levels
- Providing resources and instructional strategies that promote high expectations and learning for all students
- Guiding and supporting teachers and administrators in the implementation of research-based curriculum and instructional practices
- Organizing and delivering professional development for teachers and support staff
- Supervising and evaluating teachers in either a primary or supporting role
- Reviewing programs and practices to ensure efficacy and to reflect current research
- Providing leadership and a curriculum perspective on district, inter-district, and state committees and advisory boards
