Kindergarten Registration
Children who will be 5-years-old on or before August 31, 2012, are eligible to enter kindergarten in the Newton Public Schools in September 2012. All Newton elementary schools will hold parent information nights, followed on a separate date for registration of students. Parents who are new to Newton or who have not received any notice regarding parent information nights or registration for kindergarten should contact their neighborhood school. Those residents unsure of their neighborhood school may check online by clicking here or by calling the Assistant Superintendent’s Office at 617-559-6105.
At registration, a screening, required by Massachusetts Chapter 766 State Law, is given to each child who will be entering kindergarten. This screening is not used to determine if a child is ready for kindergarten. It is used only as a tool to provide local schools with information concerning any special learning needs a child might have before entering school.
If you speak a language in addition to English at home, during the Kindergarten Screening a teacher from the English Language Learner Program (ELL) will assess your child’s English language proficiency. By law, all students who speak a language other than English at home need to be seen by an ELL program staff member. This information will allow us to better support your child in school. If you require an interpreter at the Kindergarten screening then please let the school secretary know.
Buffer Zones
Optional (or choice) zones within the City of Newton will be renamed buffer zones to more accurately reflect their meaning. A buffer zone is a defined area for which individual addresses may be assigned to one of two elementary schools. Parents/guardians of students residing in a buffer zone must request either one of the two designated elementary schools in the zone. The requests will be granted based on space availability. Students in these zones do not have a designated home school until such time as they are assigned a school. Parents/guardians of students residing in a buffer zone must submit their requests in writing to:
Mr. Joseph Russo
Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education
100 Walnut Street
Newton, MA 02460
or email Joseph_Russo@newton.k12.ma.us.
